Brick and timber "Governors house" on the corner of Sodra Alleg and Sprangkullsgatan, Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden.

These came about because wooden buildings of more than two storeys were banned because of their fire risk, but stone buildings of more than two storeys were liable to sink into the clay in this part of the city! During the "industrial revolution" there was such a high demand for accommodation that a city governor hit on the idea of constructing a brick, or stone ground floor, with timber above that. Hence they are known as "governors houses".
