"Neighbours" Pre WW2 Europe allegorical political pictorial map. ALNWICK 1937

Neighbours. Artist/engraver/cartographer: H. Alnwick. Provenance: "A Pictorial [Picture] Atlas of the British Isles", by H. Alnwick, published by George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., London, Bombay & Sydney. Type: Vintage colour pictorial map. A fascinating political allegorical map published a couple of years before the Second World War. While whimsical in intent, it portends the approaching calamity. With hindsight, the title "Neighbours" is loaded with irony. French & German soldiers are facing off over the Rhine, while the Hitler Youth give a Nazi salute to their leader (possibly Hitler) nearby; in Italy, a Roman soldier and another figure (possibly Mussolini) similarly exchange a Roman - or Fascist - salute. Ominously, two Polish soldiers are positioned back-to-back facing both Germany and Russia. Pairs of civilians are shown in similarly defensive positions in Czechoslovakia, Austria (the Anschluss with Nazi Germany did not occur until 1938), Finland and Romania, reflecting the military threat faced on two fronts. The figures in each of the three Baltic States are looking over their shoulders at the Soviet Union.
