The only direct rail connection is by the Pacific Coastrailroad, a narrow-gauge line connecting with the Pacific Coast Steam-ship Companys vessels, and running from Los Olivos, at the upperend of Los Alamos Valley, to Port Harford by way of Santa Maria andSan Luis Obispo, thus circling the southern and western extremities of. The coast division line of the Southern Pacific is distant ina straight line but four and one-half miles from the nearest wells, butthe nearest station accessible by road is Casmalia, at a distance of eightmiles. The Santa Maria Valley railroad leaves the Southern Pacificat Betteravia, and passes through the town of Santa Maria to the CatCanon, but does not touch the Old Field. There are three refineries close to the field and using local oil, beingthat of the Union Oil Company at Port Harford, of the Pinal DomeRefining Company at Betteravia, and a small plant of the WesternUnion Oil Company, located on the lease and making products for homeconsumption. The Associated Oil Company has a plant of some sizeat Gaviota, distant about thirty miles by pipe line.
