This sculpture shows the Greek Muse Calliope seated and holding a wax tablet and stylus. It was found near Tivoli and dates to the second century According to Greek and Roman mythology, the Muses were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory, and the patrons of the arts. Calliope was the head muse and the patron of epic poetry and eloquence. She was the mother of Orpheus and Linus. This sculpture is housed in the Vatican Museum. The photo dates to 1964.
