. The street railway review . til the cylinder shaft isin an off position. The cylinder plates and con-tacts are made of thick iron stampings, as experiencehas shown that iron is a better material to use thanbrass, hitherto employed. Sparking does not burn theiron as much as the brass, and greater certainty ofgood contact is insured. The rheostat is of the reg-ular circular pattern resistance coil, which has beenin use for some months past as the standard slowstarting device. This rheostat is protected by a gal- vanized iron case, made to suit different car construc-tions. When fitting the switch, a sheet of iron and alayer of asbestos should be laid between the rheostatand the car floor. This will prevent any danger fromfire either from heating or sparking in case of acci-dent to the rhoestat. The current from the trolley wire first goes throughthe field coils and switch cyHnder for commutation, then through the armature and reversing switch, andthence through the switch contact lever and resistancecoil to EDISON CONTROLLING SWITCH. Only six wires are run to the platform switch; theseare the field magnet wires. The three wires runningto the reversing switch are of the same size as the reg-ular armature wires, as is the wire between the metalterminal of the reversing switch and the contact lever ofthe rheostat. When fitting switches to cars alreadywired, the cables can be utilized, but the terminals ofthe wires left idle should be well insulated. A NEW definition of luxury has just appeared says awicked New York paper.
