View S of Woodhenge, Wiltshire, England, UK: concrete bollards mark the site of a late Neolithic structure with 6 concentric oval rings of timber posts. Probably a roofed building (temple/shrine) with a central open court. As at Stonehenge, Woodhenge's long axis points NE towards the midsummer sunrise. The flint cairn marks a burial found in the central courtyard defined by 12 oak columns. Lying across the sunrise axis, & at right angles to it, the grave contained the skeleton of a sacrificed (cleft skull) 3-4-year-old child buried on her R side facing the sunrise. The building sits within an earlier henge monument comprising a circular ditch & external bank with an entrance at the NNE, looking towards Durrington Walls Neolithic henge where there were similar large timber structures along with smaller houses.
