The plantincreases rapidly in favourable circumstances,so that the possessor of a single shoot willsoon be able to supply his neighbours. It isperfectly hardy, even in water so shallowthat it must certainly freeze to the fragrant yellow water-lily {N. odorata, var. sulphured) is more delicate, and is easilydistinguished when out of flower because theblotched leaves are always floating. Theflower is composed of slender spreadingpetals. Its chief interest lies in the fact thatit is the offspring of two native species ( and N. Mexicand). SOME REALLY GOOD WHITE HYBRIDS Among whites none of the wild species issufficiently free-flowering to win a place in asmall collection. ? We have, however, somesuperb varieties. Possibly N. Glads
