Yellow white sun sinking orange sky, shining sand beach with sea ice, left of sand winning digger and wagon, St Annes, UK

Yellow white sun sinking orange sky to left of sand winning digger loading sand onto tractor wagon, low tide sand beach north of St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast. Commercial sand extraction on the beach north of St Annes was given planning permission in 1989. The permission expires in 2049. During 2013 an estimated mean 300 cubic metres of sand were extracted each day, adding up to a total 78,000 cubic metres a year. The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK, with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach in and around St Annes in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. The sun here shines on the beach with areas of sea ice in the foreground and mid-distance.
