"The stalks are very large, frequently an inch in diameter, with few scales ; the stalks retain their thickness completely up to the- top of the shoots, and have close, round heads. They are very quick growing ; the stalks are very tender and succulent, entirely free from woody fiber, and make shoots fit for market in a single dav.
