Local man shaping wooden surfboards to be ridden on the tidal river bore wave known locally as the Bono or 7 Ghosts by travelers
In early 2010 the local people of Teluk Meranti village on the banks of the Kampar River were wary and in awe of the monthly tidal bore wave that came past the village. Then some European traveling surfers showed up and begin to surf the river wave. Two years later and some of the locals have caught the bug with their fear turning to stoke as they want to get in on the river surfing fun. One local has even began to make wooden surfboards for his friends to surf on the river. These crude and heavy designs, although not particularly functional, do display the fickle nature of people and how easily they can inspire one another. And the surfboards this local is shaping, the knowledge coming from looking at traveling surfers boards, shows the infectious nature of something as fun and pure as surfing.
