Titterton's photograph of the Sun, obtained in 1861. This photograph, obtained at 09:45am on 21st September, shows sunspots (dark areas), and is one of the early examples of solar photography. It was taken by the British photographer John Titterton (1830-1914) in Ely, working with William Selwyn (1806-1875), Canon of Ely Cathedral. This is part of a series that they took from 1863 to 1874. The first recognisable photographs of the Sun were taken in the 1840s.
