The round building is International Tower. Built in 1966 as a 32-story round apartment complex, it has become an iconic Long Beach skyline feature. In the distance is Villa Riviera, a registered historic building on Ocean Boulevard in the Alamitos Beach. From the time of its completion in 1929 through the mid-1950s, it was the second-tallest building in Southern California. The elegant, 16-story Château-style building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 and is currently used as condominiums. Long Beach is approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Los Angeles, and is part of the Gateway Cities region. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the USA and is among the world's largest shipping ports. The city is over an oilfield with minor wells both directly beneath the city as well as offshore. The city is known for its waterfront attractions, including the permanently docked RMS Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific.
