It has a shallow thicknesson the Helderberg anticlinal fold here and extends only ashort distance south. Ferrel Ridge west of North Mountain in Berkeley Countyis flanked on the west side by a narrow belt of Oriskanywhich here is a dark- to light-gray sandstone hard and resis-tant to weathering. It enlarges to the north end of the ridgecovering the lower slope to the run level and well up on theridge. It follows the east side of the ridge in a broad beltwith a faulted narrow /.one extending southward past Toma-hawk. The sandstone on the east slope contains a consider-able quantity of chert or Bint blocks which cover the groundon the terrace ridge north of Tomahawk. Near this town the. WEST VIRGINIA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. 225 upper portion of the Oriskany is a gray hard siliceous lime-stone, very fossiliferous, while the lower part is a sandstone. A very narrow belt of Oriskany follows the west slope ofNorth Mountain nearly to the Potomac River. It is iron-stained and is a blocky resistant sandstone but its outcrop issomewhat concealed by debris and it is difficult to measureits width or thickness. The character of the Oriskany Formation in the westernoutcrop is shown in the following section made by Stose andUlrich in Maryland opposite Great Cacapon Station and givenin the Maryland Survey Report on the Lower Devonian(p. 187): Section of Oriskany Opposite Great Cacapon(Stose and Ulrich).
