Gladiator fight depicted in the Roman mosaic from the 3rd century AD on display in the National Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico Nacional) in Madrid, Spain. The secutor (Roman armed gladiator) fighting versus the retiarius (Roman net fighter). According to the Latin inscription, the secutor Astyanax and the retiarius Kalendio are engaged in mortal combat. The lanista (gladiator trainer) cheers them on. The outcome is confirmed by the inscriptions: the word VICIT appears beside Astyanax, and beside Kalendio's name is an O with a line through it, an abbreviation for Obiit or Death.
