Chiton shell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the inside of an empty shell from a chiton (class Polyplacophora). Chitons are primitive, slow moving molluscs with shells composed of eight plates that move against each other. These plates are connected to each other and the body with strong muscles. Chitons live in the surf zones of the oceans where they stick to rocks with their strong foot. Magnification: x23 when printed 10cm high.
