Medial foot and ankle bones. Artwork of an inner side view of bones and cartilage of the foot and ankle. At upper left, the lower leg bones are the tibia (thicker bone) and the fibula. They articulate at the ankle with a group of seven bones called the tarsus. Five are seen here: the calcaneus (heel bone, lower left), the talus (ankle bone, between calcaneus and tibia), the navicular and cuboid bones, and one of the cuneiform bones. From the tarsus the five metatarsals of the foot join to the phalanges (toe bones). The surfaces of the joints are covered in a form of hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage (white) that protects the bone surface from wear and tear.
