Having been mustered into the United States service upon June 19th, 1863,for the emergency, this battery was forwarded from Harrisburg to Chambersburgwith a column under Brigadier-General Joseph F. Knipe. Retreating before thesuperior numbers of the enemy to Carlisle, the command was engaged in disputingthe approach of Ewells Confederates toward Harrisburg. At Oyster Point, a fewmiles west from the State capital, the battery with its infantry support turned backthe invading column.
