The most important and best preserved of the Rom. antiquitiesof Treves is the * Porta Nigra (Rbmerthor, Simeonsthor, PI. 21)at the N. end of the town, a gate with towers of defence, pro-bably erected under Claudius about the middle of the 1st dimensions of this magnificent relic are: length 122 ft.,height 79—99 ft., breadth including the wings 178 ft. It consistsof three stories, with two gateways, 24 ft. in height, and isconstructed of huge, uncemented blocks of lias sandstone, black-ened by time. In 1035 it was converted into a church, and thelower story filled up. In this state it remained till 1817 whenit was restored to its ancient condition by the Prussian govern-.
