Los Angeles earthquake damage. Aerial view of part of Northridge in western Los Angeles, showing damage caused by the earthquake of 17 January 1994. Northridge was over the epicentre of the 'quake, which registered on the Richter scale. Building collapses are seen in the department store at top centre, the car park just left of centre and the front of a furniture store below centre. A derailed train is also seen near the bottom of the frame, and blocks a road toward lower right. This photograph was taken about 8 hours after the earthquake by a NASA ER-2 aircraft at 19,800 metres altitude, as part of an emergency damage assessment programme.
