The Washington National Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, is located in Washington DC and serves as a prominent religious landmark in the United States. This impressive Neo-Gothic structure was built by the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation and is overseen by the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. The cathedral's construction began in 1907 and was completed in 1990, spanning 83 years. Inspired by the English Gothic style, the cathedral features intricate detailing, soaring vaulted ceilings, and extensive use of limestone. Notable architectural elements include the flying buttresses, gargoyles, and more than 200 stained glass windows that illuminate the interior with vibrant colors. One of the most famous windows, the Space Window, contains a piece of moon rock brought back by the Apollo 11 mission. The Washington National Cathedral serves as a spiritual center and a hub for ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, hosting a variety of religious services, concerts, and events throughout the year. Visitors can explore the Bishop's Garden, a picturesque landscape designed in the style of a medieval walled garden, or ascend to the Pilgrim Observation Gallery for panoramic views of the city. In addition to its religious and cultural significance, the cathedral has played a role in American history, hosting state funerals and memorial services for notable figures. The cathedral is also home to a 53-bell carillon and a set of 10 peal bells, which are rung for special occasions and commemorations.
