Boiler pressure 108 lbs. minute 268 Steam Engine Indicator These diagrams shows the action of the steam while pass-ing through both cylinders, and it will be observed that thesteam expanded from an initial pressure of 121 lbs. to 30 the first cylinder, with an additional expansion in thesecond, or low pressure cylinder to 8 lbs., thus giving a rangeof temperature between 341 deg. and 182 degrees, a change of159 degrees. It is very evident that any attempt to get thesame range of expansion from a single cylinder as obtained inthis pair, would be attended with serious loss from condensa-tion ; hence, as higher steam pressures are used, and the num-ber of expansions increased, more cylinders are added in order
