Exchange Flags was an original trading site for merchants. The area was a muddy site where merchants met to conduct their trade deals, however rain would make the area messy and force traders to use shop doorways, so it was decided to pave the area and the ‘trading on the flags’ began. This continued until the late 1800’s when the invention of the telephone drove traders into offices, although messengers were often sent through the network of tunnels underneath the flags from one office to another. Revellers certainly made the most of the fun, dancing on the benches to the live oompah band. They were served with huge beer-filled Steins, with the largest two pint size coming in at a considerable £ The smaller Mass glass - or one and a half pints at £ and half a pint of Oktoberfest beer at £3. The 5% brew has been specially imported from the Bavarian Festbeer Brewery. Bottles of wine are £20 and a bottle of water is £1. There’s traditional German food too, with Bavarian sausages with fries, a pretzel, sauerkraut or salad for £ or schnitzels with sauerkraut and stampf potatoes at £10.
