The statue depicts Colonel Cheney of the Royal Scots Greys. He fought at the Battle of Waterloo, June 18th 1815. He had four horses killed from under him. He rode off on the fifth horse and the command of the regiment devolved upon him. The base of the statue (shown here) depicts Sergeant Ewart in hand to hand combat, with a French officer trying to recapture a lost Napoleonic eagle.
