Exterior View of the Kongobu-ji Temple, Koyasan. This is the Headquarters of the Shingon Buddhist Sect in Japan.


Kongobu-ji name means Temple of the Diamond Mountain. It is home to the abbot monk of Koyasan, the highest ranking monk in Shingon Buddhism. The present structure dates from the 19th Century. The original temple built at this site was in 1593 to memorialise Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Mother and was rebuilt in 1863. Two temples were combined in 1869 and renamed Kongobuji Temple.
