Vulcan Locomotive Works insignia / logo, early 20th Century. Click for info. High-rez image; very croppable.

This logo is on the end of a row of terraced houses built for workers at the Vulcan Locomotive Works, one of the most successful manufacturers of steam locomotives during the Victorian era and afterwards. Locomotives from this works were exported all around the world. Unfortunately nothing remains of the works apart from these houses. Vulcan Locomotive Works was part of Vulcan Foundry, and was located to the south of Earlestown and Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire (now on the Merseyside/Cheshire border). Vulcan was the Roman god of fire, volcanoes, metalworking and smithery; it is him who is depicted here. Even in Roman mythology, he was often shown with a blacksmith's hammer. This is a very high resolution image that is easily croppable.
