79 meters tall Makatote viaduct was the tallest viaduct when it was opened in late 1908 to bridge the Makatote Gorge for the railway from Auckland to Wellington. Today still trains between this two most important New Zealand cities cross this viaduct. Das 79 Meter hohe Makatote-Viadukt war bei seiner Eröffnung 1908 das höchste Viadukt Neuseelands und quert die Makatote-Schlucht.
