Nobody will deny that business is very dull, but there does not seem to be any good reason for raising a calamity cry; at least, not until we can find out how badly we are hurt and appraise tlie damage. To the best of the writer's recollection there never has been mucli business in August. It is true that t'he logic of events has made it tliis year a little worse than usual. Each succeeding year brings in more stock. The growers of roses and other green- house stocks arrange to keep up a pretty regular supply, while the vol- ume of gladioli and asters has been great. Dahlias, cut hydrangeas and carnation blooms from the field are also on the market in considerable quantities. The are also appearing, forerunners of an ava- lanche. It is to be hoped that the unfavorable conditions brought aJjout by tlie sudden outbreak of war in Europe will gradually pass away. In at least one respect, they have already- improved. The people who have been marooned in Europe, and it is sur- prising how large the number was, are getting»back home. On August 20 the Olympia and Adriatic of the White Star line brought ?>M)^ passengers to this port. Many of these were prorji- nent and wealthy Americans.
