Gen. David H. Berger, the commandant of the Marine Corps, served as the retiring officer. Sweeney and Berger worked together at 1st Marine Division and deployed together to Afghanistan in 2012. Sweeney has been a Navy chaplain since commissioning as a chaplain candidate aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) in 1991.
