MATTHEWS, Percy George, Bish-op of the Evanston Ward, WoodruffStake, in Uinta Co., Wyoming, wasborn May 14, 1877, at Newton Abbot,Devonshire, England, the son of Wil-liam Henry Matthews and EmilineEdmunds. His parents were convert-ed to Mormonism in England andyoung Percy at the age of seven years emigrated with his parents to Utah inthe year 1885, crossing the Atlanticon the steamship Nevada. The fam-ily located in Taylorsville, Salt LakeCo., Utah, where Percy was baptizedand confirmed in March, 1886, byElder Samuel H. Bringhurst. Fromhis early youth he was always inter-ested and active in Church matters,and soon after being ordained a Dea-. con he presided over the Deaconsquorum in Taylorsville. Up to thetime of taking up his residence inEvanston, Wyoming, in 1897, his prin-cipal work was farming and brick-making; he was also employed attimes at the smelters in Murray, Sept. 28, 1899, he married LillianL. Burdett, a native of Evanston,Wyo., James Brown, Bishop of Evan-ston Ward, officiating. Mrs. Matthewsis the daughter of James Burdett andSarah Jane Lethbridge, and was bornin Evanston, June 23, 1878, her par-ents having formerly become convertsto Mormonism in England. Bishopand Mrs. Matthews are the parentsof eleven children, namely, James Wil-liam, Gladys Alma, Sarah Emiline,Frances Lillian, Percy Lorenzo, DeliaLucille, Burdett Edmund and BernardGeorge (twins), Lamar Clarence,Grace Delores and Melvin J.
