When an old Beech tree near Felton common was poisoned in a deliberate act of vandalism there was outrage in the local community. Winford Parish Council swung into action and with the help of funding from English Nature and the nearby Bristol Airport, they decided to commission the sculptor Ant Beetlestone to create something from the dead remains of the old tree. After considering many possible subjects and ideas, taking into account the location (next to a church and close to the Airport), as well as contemplating the physical form of the tree itself, a concept conceived itself in the Parish Council Committee's mind. “ We kept coming back to the idea of an Angel” said Parish councillor Simon Banks. And so it came to pass that the gnarled trunk of the old dead tree was transformed, with the use of a chainsaw, into a Guardian Angel, its wings unfurled and poised to take flight.
