Massacre of Christian priests by the Danes in the 8th century. The Danes landed in both England and Scotland, where at first they were repulsed, but in 857 , a party of them landed somewhere near Southampton, burned down the churches, and murdered the clergy. The clergy were the most obnoxious to them, because they ridiculed their idolatry, and persuaded their people to have nothing to do with them.
