THE invention of the fire-engine is of great antiquity and involved some-what in obscurity. In chronicles relating to the destruction of cities byfire about the commencement of the Christian Era, and particularly con-cerning the burning of the town of Nicomedia in Bytbania, the lack of ma-chines or apparatus proper for extinguishing the flames was mentioned. Thevoid sipho, used in said chronicles, being translated and so understood gen-erally as meaning fire engines.
