MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JULY 5: A spokesperson from Trades Hall speaks to the media about a massive food delivery program set to start on Monday where 3,000 meals will be prepared by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and delivered to all residents of the locked down towers amid a full and total lockdown of 9 housing commission high rise towers in North Melbourne and Flemington during COVID 19 on 5 July, 2020 in Melbourne, Australia. After 108 new cases where uncovered overnight, the Premier Daniel Andrews announced on July 4 that effective at midnight last night, two more suburbs have been added to the suburb by suburb lockdown being Flemington and North Melbourne. Further to that, nine high rise public housing buildings in these suburbs have been placed under hard lockdown for a minimum of five days, effective immediately. Residents in these towers will not be allowed to leave their units for any reason. Police will be stationed at every entry and exit point, every level, and they will also surround these locations preventing any movement in, or out. There is a total of 1354 units and over 3000 residents living in these buildings including the states most vulnerable people. Authorities will ensure that food, medical supplies and general supplies will be provided as well as any mental health services as required. This move is unprecedented in Australia’s history and will require an unprecedented number of police to enforce the total lockdown with estimates of over 500 police officers stationed at these locations to enforce the lockdown orders. This comes amid fears of a second wave of Coronavirus infections in Victoria, with the total active cases now being 509. Fourteen are linked to controlled out breaks, 25 from routine testing and 69 are still under investigation. These new restrictions will remain in place for fourteen days with fears of further lockdowns to come.
