Attributed to Paolo di Dono, called Uccello (1397 -1475). The Annunciation, tempera and gilding on panel. The Archangel Gabriel was commanded by God to announce to the Virgin Mary that she would give birth to the Saviour. The imagery recalls that of ornate illuminated manuscripts. With lavish use of gold and ultramarine blue, this devotional image would have been very expensive to produce. Dated 15th Century
