The elevation of Bear Creek at this point is about 4,800 feet. Ridges rise abruptly on both sides to a height of 2,000 feet above the creek. The seeded area is smooth and practically level. The soil is a deep, black, slightly clayey loam of alluvial character. The minimum water contained in the soil taken at a depth of 8 inches during the summers of 1908, 1909, and 1910 was 16 per cent. The land originally bore a heavy stand of timber, of which western larch, Engelmann spruce, yellow pine,.
