Exterior face of the Multangular Tower at NW corner of the Roman legionary fortress of Eboracum, York, England, UK. This SW wall of the fortress was reconstructed by Constantine the Great, Roman emperor AD 306-337, with two great corner towers & six polygonal-fronted interval towers in between. The smaller stones in the lower half of the tower are original Roman work the upper, larger masonry is medieval (C13th). This stretch of fort wall faced the River Ouse with the colonia settlement for Roman citizens on its opposite bank. In the time of Emperor Vespasian (AD 69-79) York became the new depot for the Ninth Legion. Under Septimius Severus (AD 193-211) Roman Britain was divided into two provinces, York became the capital city of Britannia Inferior with London the capital of Britannia Superior.
