This is bestaccomplished by wrapping the parts in a thin linen towel wrung outof cold water at 60° F., covered first with a mackintosh, and thenwith several layers of flannel. The mackintosh should be made tofit the skin closely above and below, so as to avoid evaporation andchilling. In chronic cases accompanied by exudate without pain, alight bath may be followed by the spray or douche with cold water,lasting from thirty to sixty seconds. In the absence of a doucheapparatus the water may be poured upon the knee from a basin heldas high as possible while the limb is supported over a tub.
