Carbon-rich planet, artwork. Some planets are thought to form from protoplanetary discs richer in carbon than silicates, leading to a carbon-rich planet. Earth, in contrast, is formed largely of silicates (silicon and oxygen). Carbon-rich planets would be formed mostly of various forms and compounds of carbon, such as carbides, graphite and diamond. Here, crystalline diamond structures are seen in a crater (lower right), with most of the rest of the surface covered by duller tars and other hydrocarbons. The planet's parent star is at upper right.
