Scratch and bruise (image 4 of 7). Close-up of a scratch and bruise on a man's arm, four days after the injury occurred. The skin damaged by the scratch has begun to heal under the crust of clotted blood (scab). Pieces of the dried scab have come away revealing a slight scar. The bruise below the scratch has now fully developed. Breakage of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) in the skin has caused extensive purple discoloration. Areas of yellow are due to the breakdown of haemoglobin (the blood's pigment). (See photo numbers M330/668-670 and M330/672-674 for the scratch and bruise on days 1- 3 and through to day 7).
