Mosquito egg. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an egg of the Aedes vexans mosquito. Aedes vexans is a common European mosquito. The female lays around 100 eggs about 5 days after mating and her blood meal. The eggs are laid individually in damp soil in meadows. After about 8 days, the larvae hatch and then develop through stages over several weeks into the adult mosquito. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
