Theseambulances were large andcomfortable, being works of art as to construction and fire company, with that proverbial pride, vied with eachother to have the finest. They were built, manned, equippedand operated without charge, being backed up by the volunteercontributions of the friends and ladies in their respective neigh-borhoods. Delaware, Southwark, Washington, Weccacoe, Diligent,Philadelphia (2), Assistance, America, Fairmount, NorthernLiberty, United States, Vigilant, Good Intent, Globe, Mechanic,. JAMES McGINNIS,Co. E. Regimental Marker. PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY. 17H Decatur, Fellowship (2), Monroe, Good Will (2), West Phila-delphia. HOSE COMPANIES. Franklin, Hope, Southwark, Western, Philadelphia, GoodWill, Neptune, Cohocksink, Kensington, Independence, North-ern Liberty, West Philadelphia. In 1864, during the great Sanitary Fair, held at LoganSquare, 18th and Race streets, for the benefit of the SanitaryCommission, a patriotic body, that looked after the welfare ofthe sick and wounded soldiers, in which ov^er a million of dol-lars was realized, the firemen took quite an interest. Amongthe many ventures was a contest for a fire horn, many of the
