Early morning view of township housing and the !820 English Settlers National Monument, Grahamstown, South Africa

The early morning sun shines on government improved township houses by the side of a main road within easy reach of work in central Grahamstown. On the hillside beyond, overlooking the sleepy hollow in which the small city stands, we see the massive square structure of the 1820 English Settlers National Monument, a living monument (conference centre, venue for cultural activities) used each year by over 200,000 South Africans from all walks of life. Opened in 1974, after public interest to build a monument was first expressed in the 1950s, it commemorates the contribution of the English language, as much as the democratic ideals of the Pioneers, in the history of South Africa.
