Muharram is the first month of the islamic calendar, the most sacred of all months excluding ramadan. It is a time when muslims (especially shia) remember the sufferings of imam Husain, the grandson of prophet Muhammad, who was killed at the battle of Karbala (at present time in Irak) in 680. A time to fast (the whole month for shia, some days for sunni). The 10° day, "ashura", is particularly important. In many muslim countries, men practice self-flagellation but in India, processions ("ta'zieh") are held to commemorate the martyrdom of Husain
