Weknew Dr. Mellor had good Black Mi-norcas, for we have camped on histrail from year to year at our larg-est Eastern shows where he has ex-hibited, and have seen a great num-ber of champion birds he has sold toothers who have won in some of thegreatest shows of the South andWest, but it remained until our re-cent visit to Dr. Mellors beautifulsuburban home, to see such a displayof Black Minorcas as our eyes neverrested on before. There are cockbirds weighing up to 13 lb. or over, hens more than a pound above Stand-ard weight, cockerels and pullets. ready, right now, to carry awaycrowns of blue in any show in theland. We have never seen such colorbefore as we saw on Dr. Mellors cockbirds. Not a sign of purple, or white,in any section of the plumage. Justone splendid display of deep beetlegreen from comb to tip of tail. Near-ly every cockerel we examined had apure white, olive shaped ear lobe al-most as perfect as an artist coulddraw, and every one of them carrieda low tail and showed such wonder-ful Minorca symmetry as we havenever seen before among so large anumber of birds. The pullets, whilenot quite so fully matured, are con-structed along the same standard linesand if Dr. Mellors Minorcas do notwin more blue ribbons this seasonthan ever before, it will be on accountof the fact that the Judge does notknow the Minorca Standard or elsesome one has secret pens of birdstoo sacred for the eyes of thestranger within the gates to lookupon.
