Gen. (Ret.) Brent Scowcroft in Section 30 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, January 29, 2021. Scowcroft, a 1947 graduate of the Military Academy at West Point, served our Nation in uniform from 1947 until he retired as a Lt. Gen. in 1975. He was the ninth and 17th National Security serving under former Presidents Gerald R. Ford and George Bush. He served as deputy national security advisor under former President Richard M. Nixon. The general accompanied President Nixon on his 1972 trip to China, oversaw the Ford administration’s evacuation of Americans from Saigon in 1975 and laid the groundwork for former President Jimmy Carter’s Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty with the Soviet Union. He also evaluated the MX missile systems for President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s and directed President George Bush’s strategy in the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. presented the flag from Scowcroft’s casket to Scowcroft’s daughter, Karen.
