The latter form will, of course, be moreexpensive in first cost, but it is believed that many of thesame arguments can be urged in favor of a gear with a shrunkrim that have been advanced in favor of the steel-tired instance, the steel center of a gear of this type can, withentire justification, be considered as a permanent part of thetruck investment, and the cost of maintaining gears will bevirtually confined to the cost of renewing the rim. The re-sults that will be secured with the solid manganese and theKrupp case-hardened gear are still problematical, but confi-dence is expressed that these harder metals will give a goodaccount of themselves in the application to the making ofgears for extra heavy service.
