"As an instance of tlie growth of the shortage in practically all lines, take our catalogue for 1917. Althougli tliis has been out only a short time, it has been necessary to make three revisions in prices so far, and, of course, each revi- sion has been at an advance over the previous one. '' The foreign situation has had a marked influence on conditions too. In previous years most of the spinach seed has come from Holland; but now an em- bargo has been placed on exports of the seed. In this country the spinach grow- ing center is around Norfolk, Va., and usually at this time of year we have a salesman down there. We have sent none this year, however, for we have not got the stock to sell. If we had, there would be no trouble in disposing of 100,- 000 pounds at $1 a pound, double last year's quotation. "The scarcest seeds this year are spinach, beans, peas, sweet corn, pota- toes and onions. There is enough of the other general run of varieties to go round, but at much higher prices than normal. "One result of the scarcity is likely to be seen in higher prices for pickling, as the big firms in that industry have been unable to get seed of the kind of onions they need. Tlie demand for canning in- dustries has been a factor also in keep- ing prices up. "Market gardeners have been hit by the shortage of labor, as well as of seed.
