Meteorological observations, 1847. Historical sequence of eight numbered artworks showing the changing form of a light in the sky, as seen over Benares (now known as Varanasi) in northern India, on 11 November 1847. The caption to the artwork described the phenomenon as a 'meteor'. Historically, the term 'meteor' was used to refer to any phenomenon observed in the atmosphere, hence the term meteorology.
