View W of the round tower adjacent to the partly ruined cathedral at Kilmacduagh, Co Galway, Republic of Ireland: it is over 100ft (30m) high & one of the best preserved in the country. The monastery was founded in the early C7th by St Colman son of Duagh (hence Kil mac Duagh) a member of one of the local royal families. The slightly leaning tower may be C11th-C12th, the cathedral dates from the 11th-15th centuries. There are several other Medieval monastic buildings - three churches & possibly the Abbots house - to the N & E of the cathedral. The round tower would have served as a bell tower to summon the monks from the fields for prayer. Also as a lookout & refuge for the monks & church treasures from Viking & other raiders. Access to the high doorway was via a wooden or rope ladder which could be drawn up & the wooden door barred from inside.
