In 1843, undefthe impulse of a renewed interest in astronomy that had been awakened bythe celebrated comet of that year, at a small meeting held in the office of Bowditch of Boston, measures were taken which resulted in the sub-scription of a considerable sum for the purpose of obtaining a large telescope,equatorially mounted, and a suitable building to receive it. With these fundsthe present observatory building, with the exception of the west wing, addedin 1851, was completed in 1846, and the instruments removed from the DanaHouse. During the next year the equatorial telescope from Munich was re-ceived and mounted. The aperture of the telescope is fifteen inches, and thefocal length twenty-two feet and six inches.
